Services: MRS Counselling Recognizing that academic and clinical training place great demands on today’s students, this service is here to provide confidential assistance in these areas. Two Radiation Therapists with extensive experience are well-positioned to understand your needs. Aisha Sheikh is based at the Sunnybrook Hospital/Odette Cancer Centre and U of T. Patricia Charman is based at Princess Margaret Hospital and U of T. Both therapists provide part-time counseling and remedial services to students in all three disciplines of the Medical Radiation Sciences Program. Services provided relate not only to academic and clinical issues, but also personal, interpersonal, communication, ESL, and financial issues. Counseling takes place in individual or group sessions, as well as in a remedial laboratory-based setting. Telephone consultations are available for students in clinics outside the Toronto area. All services provided are completely confidential. No information is shared without your consent or at your request. Sessions held at U of T, Sunnybrook Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. Other locations arranged as needed. Both counsellors for Medical Radiation Sciences students have many years of clinical experience as radiation therapists. Teaching students is part of their clinical duties and they are fully aware of the issues faced by students and what they need to succeed. They have both obtained certificates from the Stepping Stones program offered by the Centre for Faculty Development in the Faculty of Medicine/St. Michael's Hospital. They provide ongoing support for students throughout their academic as well as clinical training irrespective of their clinical site. They have also been involved in remedial work as well as conducting clinical skills/techniques labs for students. They also help students to improve their communication skills, interpersonal skills and to make sense of their clinical evaluations and improve their clinical performance. They teach them how to deal with the stress and anxiety that could only be experienced in a clinical setting, as well as how to handle questions. They help students increase their self-confidence over time in a confidential one-on-one setting.
