Crisis Resources

If this is a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 right away or go to the nearest emergency department.

Dealing with personal crisis: please know that you are not alone. There are many people who can help you, no matter what problem you might be facing.

How to access help:

Your Faculty of Medicine Office of Health Professions Student Affairs (OHPSA) has personal counsellors specifically to assist you with any personal concerns/issues. These services are available to all students at both the St. George and MAM campuses. They provide daytime and evening appointment times. These services are confidential; counsellor offices are privately located at both campuses. You may arrange an appointment in the following ways:

You can drop-in, call, or e-mail to arrange an appointment:
• The OHPSA receptionist can book an appointment for both MAM and St. George students. Click here, call 416-978-2764 or e-mail ohpsa.reception@utoronto.ca 
• On the St. George campus, the OHPSA office is at MSB, 1 King’s College Circle, Room 2171B
• At  the MAM campus, the office is located in the Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex, 3359 Mississauga Road.

24 Hour Resources:
St. George Campus
The Gerstein Crisis Resources offer free, voluntary and confidential crisis intervention service over the phone and in-person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Crisis line 416-929-5200
Toronto Distress Lines: Services for individuals in distress who require urgent medical or emotional care, also called 211 Toronto. Includes services for individuals who have been physically or sexually assaulted or who are at risk of being assaulted. Crisis phone 416-408-4357 ; 416-408-HELP

Mississauga Campus
Distress Centre Peel at 905-278-7208 or the Mississauga Crisis Intervention Team at Trillium Health Centre, at 905-848-7100 or 905-848-7495.

All Campuses
University of Toronto Campus Community Police: Any situation on any campus requiring immediate police, fire, or medical response to preserve life or property. Call 911 or from an internal phone line dial 9-911 to report serious incidents such:
• Any life threatening situation
• A fire
• A serious injury or illness such as suspected heart attack, someone choking breathing difficulties, unconsciousness
• Sexual assault
• An assault or immediate danger of assault including persons fighting
• A situation involving weapons
• A crime in progress and suspect is still in the area
• A drowning
• An uncontrolled chemical spill
• Serious motor vehicle collisions
To ensure prompt service, after calling 911 contact University Police at 416-978-2222 In an emergency or when other suitable options are unavailable, please call 911 or go to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital.


Crisis lines specifically for medical students
PAIRO 24 hour Helpline: 1-866-HELP-DOC (1-866-435-7362): This is a joint project with the Distress Centres of Toronto and Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO). This service provides 24hr crisis intervention as well as referrals for medical students, family doctors, stress management, drug and alcohol counselling and many other services. All calls are strictly confidential.
 
Other Campus Resources
St. George
CAPS (Counselling and Psychological Services)
CAPS offers confidential, individual, couples and group short-term counselling and psychotherapy to University of Toronto students. CAPS is available to students on both campuses and offers assessment and treatment of emotional and psychological concerns. The service is confidential, and fully covered by OHIP, other provincial health plans or UHIP. Koffler Student Services Building, 214 College Street, main floor, 416-978-8070

All campuses
Domestic or Sexual Assault: U of T has confidential services to assist with emergency and ongoing support until the student’s situation has been resolved. Contact the Assault Counsellor and Educator, Counselling and Learning Skills Services, 214 College St.416-978-0174.
The Community Safety Office is useful for those students who feel that their personal safety may be at risk. Their number is 416.978.1485

External Resources
Physicians Health Program: The Physician Health Program (PHP) founded in 1995, is a program of the Ontario Medical Association. The PHP provides assistance to physicians, residents, and students experiencing a range of  problems such as  stress, burnout, work-related conflict, emotional, marital and family problems, substance use disorders and psychiatric illness.
