Graduate Degree Programs

Departments and Institutes

The Faculty of Medicine provides some of the most challenging and rewarding research opportunities available to graduate students, both in clinical and laboratory settings. The University of Toronto produces high calibre doctoral and professional health graduates in Community Health, Basic Sciences, Rehabilitation Medicine and Clinical Sciences. Collaborative programs offer training in multiple disciplines.

Doctoral Degree Programs

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Candidates for the Master of Science program may choose from a variety of specialized areas in the field of science. The area selected is usually a continuationof a course of study previously pursued as an undergraduate. When it is not, prerequisite work may be required and the length of program may be extended.
Please see the School of Graduate Studies Calendar for further information.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Admission to a Ph.D. program requires an appropriate master's degree or equivalent with at least a B+ standing from a recognized university in a discipline appropriate to the intended field of doctoral studies. Please see the School of Graduate Studies Calendar for further information.

Combined Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy Program (M.D./Ph.D.)

The M.D./Ph.D. Program is offered jointly by the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Graduate Studies. For highly motivated students with superior research and academic potential, the M.D./Ph.D. program offers a unique training environment for individuals who want to pursue careers in academic medicine and research. Curriculum integration between medical school and graduate school is achieved on an individual basis, and the dual degrees are completed in seven to eight years. To gain admission to the M.D./Ph.D. Program, students must be acceptable both to the undergraduate medical program and to a graduate department or institute. Students should consult the appropriate graduate department or institute regarding research programs and potential supervisors.

Collaborative Programs

In addition to the programs offered through our graduate departments, centres, and institutes, unique collaborative programs are also available. These innovative programs emerge from the cooperation between two or more graduate units, providing the student with a broader base from which to explore a novel interdisciplinary area or a special development in a particular discipline, to complement their degree studies. Although the SGS Collaborative Programs webpage has a more complete listing of programs at the University of Toronto ( http://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/SGSGuide2003/collaborative.asp) the following list contains links to some of the collaborative programs associated with the Faculty of Medicine:
