Dean's Message
Medicine at U of T is part of a major transformation in health care in Canada and across the world. Driven by our commitment to social responsibility, Medicine at U of T offers answers to global health issues and provides local solutions. In 2010, Medicine at U of T, was ranked #5 globally in the category of “Clinical Medicine” by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan and 12th in the world in “Clinical and Pre-Clinical Health” by the Times Higher Education World Rankings. This achievement is a result of the unique position of Medicine at U of T as the only medical school in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and to our long standing and deep-rooted successful affiliation with nine academic Toronto hospitals/research institutes and our 20 Community Hospital and clinical care affiliates.
Medicine at U of T has more than 6,000 total academic faculty, approximately 7,000 students and trainees at all levels and programs and 22,000 continuing education registrants, constituting a learner population that is one of the largest, the most diverse - among the very best anywhere in the world. Across our many departmental disciplines, affiliated hospitals/research institutes, we are an integrated community, leveraging the size and excellence of our faculty and student populations to create unique and optimal education and research opportunities.
A true dedication to social responsibility permeates all activities in Medicine at U of T. The allegiance of our education, research and administrative enterprise is collectively towards making a difference in health outcomes by producing a workforce that meets societal needs, answers our society’s health problems and demonstrates accountability and leadership in academic medicine. A key goal is to integrate across educational, research and training in vast affiliated community to create opportunities for innovation. Those innovations, in turn, have a measureable impact on improving the health of populations near and far. Our achievements are outlined in our Dean's Report: Integration, Innovation, Impact and we have mapped out our plan to build on those successes in our 2011- 2016 five-year Strategic Plan.
I am proud of our Faculty’s international stature and collective achievements and am energized by the opportunities that the future presents. Working to improve the health of individuals and populations here in Canada and around the world is a daunting challenge, and the improvement of our health care system remains a priority in this country. The incredible efforts of our faculty, staff and students have earned the respect and regard of peer universities, affiliated partners and international colleagues as well as our public supporters.
