Research led by Prof. John Dick (Department of Molecular Genetics) and published in Nature Medicine shows that acute myeloid leukemia contains rare cells with stem cell properties, called leukemia stem cells, which are better at predicting clinical outcome than the majority of acute myeloid leukemia cells. The findings demonstrate for the first time that leukemia stem cells are significant not just in experimental models but also in patients.
